Room 2 Art inspiration!

In room 2 we have been inspired by the tapa cloth designs of the famous artist Fatu Feu’u. We decided to choose some of our favourite Ngatu and Siapo tapa cloth symbols and create our own class tapa cloth.
Here are some of our Tapa cloth finished products and our thoughts about the meaning of the symbols we chose...

I drew the Fata ‘o Tu'i Tonga and Fa’a ‘ali ‘ao. Fata ‘o Tu'i Tonga is like the tight, hard rope that holds the fale together.
Kalia-Mata, year 2.

I drew the Hala Paini and the Fa’a atualoa. The Hala Paini trees are special to Tonga.
Ivalani, year 2.

My Artwork.
I have drawn the Manulua and the Leva berries. The manulua is the wings of a bird and the Leva berries are only found in Samoa.
David, year 2.

On my artwork I have leva berries, the berries are red.
Alex, year 2.

The Fa'atuli is a special bird in Samoa and you can see the

wings flying.

Kataana, year 2.

We hope we have inspired you whanau!!

SHAKE OUT at Yendarra

On Thursday the 15th of October Yendarra participated in the nationwide SHAKE OUT earthquake drill.
There were over 1.36 million kiwis that took part. Did you?

Do you know what to do to keep safe in an earthquake?

Here are some senior children showing us what to do if an earthquake occurred during learning time.

Let’s test your knowledge after the SHAKE OUT.
Here are some questions for you; How many will you get right?

   1.    What are the 3 key words to remember in an earthquake?
2.    Why are some children holding onto the table legs?
3.    Why are the children holding onto their mahunga (heads)?
4.    How do you keep safe if you are outside in an earthquake?

Singing In Room

Ruma tahi are learning to sing clearly and do actions to help us with our learning.
We sing this song to show our school value "Aroha", by blowing a kiss and catching it and putting it in our little hearts.

Click on this link to view.

Enjoy!!!

Science fun in Room 5

This week in Room 5 we have become scientists and have started some exciting experiments!

One of our favourite experiments has been seeing what happens to an eggshell left in Coke, V, and water for 2 days.
We were very surprised by what we saw! Here are some of our observations:

"The egg in V looks like it has sugar on it!" - Trinity

"It looks like sugar and ice." - Aisake

"The coke egg turned brown. The water egg is shiny. The eggs are cracked" - John

"The coke egg looks dirty inside, the V one looks salty and the water egg looks the same" - Omera

We looked at how much sugar is in these drinks and asked a big question-
If this happens to the eggshells, then what would happen to our teeth?

Tongan Language Week at Yendarra

Yendarra share in the GREETING Malo e lelei

https://cpitlibrary.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/tongan.png?w=600
Malo aupito! to our Tongan whanau for sharing your love of language and culture through song, clothing and food.

Learning Tongan language this week has been a very ‘unique’ experience for our tamariki. We have learnt to appreciate each other’s cultures and experiences.  All classes had the opportunity to learn through pictures, video, stories, word charts, songs and live commentary from our Tongan teachers Mrs Tu'ikolovatu, Miss Tuli and our Tongan students.

When our Tongan whanau ‘dressed in their best’ we were all ‘star struck’ at how bright and beautiful everyone looked which caught the attention of so many compliments…

Your Tupenu makes you look neat, tidy and very tall…

You look amazing with bright colours…

The patterns weaved on your ta’ovala look awesome…

An impressive outfit must be made by some impressive family members…

If the week wasn’t already special Mrs Tu'ikolovatu and room 1 went visiting to share the Tongan love of song which made us all so very happy.

Room 23 goes swimming

Best Swimming Coaches
Thank you for teaching us different swimming skills.
We enjoyed wearing life jackets to help us float on our backs and our tummies
It was fun playing games like treasure hunt, red light, green light and rocket arms.
When we grow up we would love to be instructors too to teach others how to keep safe when they go swimming at the beach and the pools.
